The City of Flowery Branch is looking to purchase 6.67 acres of land on Thurmon Tanner Parkway to build a new police headquarters near Interstate 985.
On Thursday, the City Council will vote on the purchase of the land from Atlanta One Limited Partnership for $1,975,000.
According to city documents, the population and staff growth have caused the police department to outgrow the space it occupies downstairs at city hall.
City staff moved into City Hall in March 2018, with Administration and Community Development upstairs and the Police Department downstairs.
“The parcel on Thurmon Tanner was identified as a potential site for a future public safety building, and the parties have come to an agreement for the terms of the purchase,” City documents stated.
Flowery Branch Police Chief Chris Hulsey said the department has nearly doubled in staff, going from 16 to 18 employees to nearly 30 since moving into the current complex.
Hulsey said they have remodeled the current headquarters, but no longer have space to grow.
“Now there's nothing we can do to have room for any other advancements. We have just used every nook and cranny of this current building, so we have got to have more room,” Hulsey said.
Hulsey added that the plans for the new headquarters are in the very early stages, and he is unsure where the funding for the new building will come from.
“It will not be a precinct. It will actually be the headquarters of the police department and the Municipal Court,” Hulsey said. “So there will be a courthouse or a courtroom inside of this same building.”
Hulsey said they are looking to build in the 985 corridor because it is the central part of Flowery Branch and will help response times.
