There’s been an update in the Tuesday morning fire at the Oxford Apartments in Lawrenceville.
According to Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services, the fire tore through a three-story building, displacing over 30 residents, and injuring a firefighter.
The firefighter was sent to a local burn center after a partial roof collapse during firefighting efforts.
Gwinnett County Fire was dispatched just before 9 a.m. after multiple 9-1-1 calls, with callers indicating residents may be trapped inside.
Crews encountered heavy fire and mounted an aggressive attack, deploying two hose lines.
During search and rescue, the roof collapsed and trapped a fire attack crew on a second-story balcony.
They were evacuated via ladder and over 20 occupants were safely evacuated during the incident.
In total, 12 units were affected by the fire, resulting in a complete loss.
One resident suffered minor injuries and was transported by medical crews. The occupants in the apartment stated they were sleeping when they heard crackling, and opened the door to flames and smoke coming from the balcony.
Smoke alarms were reportedly not present.
The 31 residents displaced are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross and apartment management.
Investigators determined the fire began on the second-story balcony while the cause remains under investigation.

Crews with Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services are currently on the scene of an apartment fire in Lawrenceville.
As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, crews responded to the Oxford Apartments in Lawrenceville on Club Lakes Parkway to a fire that involved a structural collapse.
No other details have been provided on how the fire began or if injuries were involved.
