GAINESVILLE – It might have been a slow start, but Gainesville eventually warmed up after the weather cleared up and ran away with a 26-7 win over Marietta Friday night.
After a scoreless first quarter, Kharim Hughley found Dwight lewis for the first points of the night at the 10:38 mark of the second quarter to give Big Red a 6-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, Nigel Newkirk punched it in on a touchdown run to double the Red Elephant lead to 12-0.
Gainesville wasn't done in the second quarter as Hughley found Phillip Williams for a 59-yard pitch-and-catch to make it 19-0 at halftime.
The third quarter went the same way as the first quarter with the fourth quarter starting off with a Hughley 2-yard rushing touchdown that capped the Gainesville scoring. Marietta scored late on a rushing touchdown to escape the shutout.
Gainesville will be back at home on Thursday, August 21, when they host Moody (Ala.).
