Overall, the 2024 season was one of the most successful in recent memory, with 17 of the 26 schools in our coverage area advancing to the playoffs.
Three of those teams reached the quarterfinals (Jefferson, North Hall, Cherokee Bluff), one advanced to the state title game (Jefferson) and Lanier Christian won the GAPPS state title.
Believe it or not, the 2025 campaign could top that.
It’s the opening weekend of high school football across the state. Expectations are running high, and we know the outlook will be a bit clearer after Friday night’s action.
Regardless of the outcomes, we're finally happy to kick off the 2025 high school football season with three games on the Jacobs Media airwaves and streaming live on AccessWDUN.com.
Franklin County at Chestatee —This game was the start to one of the best seasons in Chestatee's history. The War Eagles' 27-21 win also snapped an 11-game losing streak. It was also a building block to the War Eagles' advancing to the state playoffs. This year, it’ll serve as yet another gauge for a team that returns several starters. The expectations in Sardis are to pick up where they left off last season. There is also an expectation of winning. The game can be heard live on WDUN AM 550 (Click to listen live).
East Hall at Banks County —Talk about a game without a lot of intrigue surrounding it. It’s this one. It’s also a game of contrasting styles. The Leopards run the triple-option offense, and the Vikings bolster an explosive spread attack. Banks County will be better under Todd Winter, now in his second year in Homer. The offense will be more of a smash-mouth, triple-option under the direction of former Commerce head coach Mark Hollars. As for the Vikings, the hype surrounds the athletic talent on the roster, especially with quarterback Jamarcus Harrison. However, this game will come down to who can stop whom? Because both will have the ability to get up and down the field. The game can be heard live on FM 102.9 WDUN (Click to listen live).
Marietta at Gainesville — Here’s the sentence from last year’s radio games feature: Gainesville's defense will be nasty, but how good will the offense be? That still applies. However, what we do know is junior quarterback Kharim Hughley is trending toward a breakout season. As for those around him, Big Red has some new faces. All eyes are focused on Gainesville, and the season opener at City Park should be packed. The outcome should be the same as last season, a Big Red rout. The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake (Click to listen live).
