The newly-realigned White Sulpur Road near the Blue Ridge Connector inland port project near Gainesville is now open to the public.

The Hall County Government announced the opening in a release Thursday. The realignment of White Sulphur Road has now closed the Cagle Road railroad crossing permanently, instead creating a new alignment for White Sulphur that runs east of the railroad tracks, rather than west.

The newly-opened roadway represents Phase I of the project, with Phase II set to widen White Sulphur from the Blue Ridge Connector to Ga. 365. Phase I also saw repaving on Cagle Road.

Hall County District 3 Commissioner Gregg Poole said in a statement that road realignment is a key part of the Blue Ridge Connector project.

"The new realignment and future widening of White Sulphur Road are essential investments in the safety and functionality of our infrastructure, especially with the increasing demands placed on the (Ga.) 365 corridor and anticipated freight traffic with the new Inland Port," Poole said. "We're glad to see Phase I open, and I am pressing Hall County Government to complete work on Phase II as quickly as possible in coordination with GDOT."

County officials said Phase II of the project is already underway with right-of-way acquisition.
