The Gainesville Board of Education announced today in a press release that they will not be filling its recent vacancy with an interim board member, choosing instead to opt for a general election to determine the next representative.

Kris Nordholz was previously the District 2 representative and Vice Chair of the board. He served from 2019 to June 2nd of this year, resigning due to the fact that he would be moving away from the Gainesville area.

The Board has reportedly concluded after several internal discussions that "allowing the voters to directly choose their representative" is the most effective and democratic position to take for this term.

"This decision reflects our deep commitment to the democratic process and our trust in the voters of District 2,” stated Andy Stewart, Gainesville City Board Chair. "While we recognize the importance of having a full board, we believe that the community should have the direct opportunity to elect the individual who will best represent their interests and contribute to the future of our schools."

In a two-week period, the Gainesville City School System received interest from two candidates, both fully intent on campaigning for the District 2 seat.

The open seat will be included on the ballot for the general election scheduled for November 4..
