The Gainesville Department of Water Resources stopped a minor sewer spill near Lake Lanier on July 3.
The City of Gainesville stated that they were notified of the spill at approximately 10:30 a.m., and the spill was located near the 2800 block of Point Overlook at around 11:30 a.m.
The issue was resolved at around 11:50 a.m. and was deemed to be caused by grease buildup in the sewer line.
Nearly 6,500 gallons of sewage spilled, according to DWR.
The area was assessed, and no dead or stressed aquatic life was found. All field parameters for water quality were within state water quality standards.
DWR applied Lime to the area for odor abatement.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division was notified, and signs were posted in the area.
DWR reminds the public not to dispose of cooking grease and oils down the drain.
