Just over a week after reporting new phone scams in the area, the Union County Sheriff's Office is warning of a new email scam that has been circulating in the mountain county.
The sheriff's office posted to social media Thursday saying the latest scam involves emails pretending to come from PayPal customer support.
"This particular email indicated a fraudulent transaction while purchasing a firearm," the sheriff's office said. "It asks that you call into PayPal customer support and the email provides an '800' number."
The sheriff's office said if victims call the number, the scammers then request that they confirm certain personal information and, in some cases, try to gain access to the victim's computer.
"While the email might look official (and) include official looking logos and the email address of the sender might even look official, please do not call any 800 numbers or click on any links in these emails," the sheriff's office said.
Authorities also advised not to click any links from emails that are not from trusted sources, and said if you receive a call asking you to confirm your identity or provide a security code to hang up.
"If you are ever uncertain whether something is a scam, before you provide any information/money, please contact the sheriff's office. 9.99 times out of 10 your gut is right," the sheriff's office said.
