The area near Cornelia City Hall was evacuated for a time Wednesday evening after a pair of hand grenades were brought to the the city's police headquarters.
At around 6 p.m., two individuals came to the City Hall and approached a Cornelia police officer outside the police department. They told the officer they had found the two grenades while cleaning out a house in Habersham County and wanted the department to dispose of them.
Officers immediately initiated the bomb protocol and evacuated the immediate area around City Hall and called in the Cornelia Fire Department and Habersham EMS. The GBI Bomb Squad also was called to the scene to assess the situation.
The two grenades were determined to be empty of powder but the fuses were still in place. Both pieces of ordinance were taken by the GBI to be disposed of at another location.
