Former Governor Nathan Deal and Brenda Micali were married Saturday, using a symbolic gesture to seal their vows in a ceremony.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Monday that the ceremony took place in Arnoldsville, Oglethorpe County, east of Athens, surrounded by family and friends who told the AJC the couple brings each other peace.
The ceremony marked a joyful beginning for Deal, whose first wife, Sandra Dunagan Deal, died in 2022. Her legacy as a champion for literacy still shapes his life.
Deal and Micali connected after both lost longtime partners, Govenor Deal's being Sandra, and hers, being Tommy Micali, who was one of the governor's fraternity brothers. The AJC said that a call about using one of Tommy’s favorite sayings in Deal’s book sparked a relationship built on shared loss and mutual understanding.
“It’s never too late to fall in love,” Governor Deal's daughter Carrie Deal later said in regards to her father's walk down the aisle. “We are thrilled, she is lovely and most importantly, Dad is happy.” She also added, “It took compassion and patience. And a lot of courage from Dad. Mom would’ve wanted him to be happy.”
