The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has confirmed reports of meteor sightings across northeast Georgia and South Carolina.
Eyewitness photos shared by Alondra A. Vargas in the Eyewitness Hall County Facebook Group capture the moments following the meteor sighting at the University of North Georgia’s Gainesville campus.
NWS meteorologist Keith Stellman said they received reports of a possible earthquake at around 12:45 p.m. Thursday.
“As we started to look into it, more video started to come to us about seeing smoke or a fireball in the sky. It led us to believe that what probably happened was a meteor crossed the sky of North Georgia around that time, and would have caused what felt like an earthquake, because it was breaking the sound barrier, sending a shock wave out, and then people would feel that as a possible small earthquake,” Stellman said.
NWS emergency management received reports of a small rock that came through the roof of a home in Henry County.
“We don't know if that's related to it, but it is possible that a piece of the Meteor may have fallen through it would have been fairly close to the ground when it crossed, for it to do what it did and make the sound and be visible,” Stellman said. “So we're not ruling that it didn't hit the ground, or someplace in north Georgia where it didn't do something. It's too recent for us to figure that out.”
