A Tuesday night  residential fire in Snellville killed one person.

The Gwinnett County Fire department said firefighters responded to the scene  on the 4200 block of Round Stone Trail SW in unincorporated Snellville at 7:35 p.m. The caller reported that their neighbor's house was on fire and that a person was trapped inside.

Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters observed that the back side of the single-family home was completely engulfed in flames.  Crews began working to extinguish the flames and locate victims.

According to a release from the department, firefighters attempted to enter the home through a second story window, but the roof of the structure collapsed. Crews were forced  to withdraw their rescue attempts until they could reassess the structure's stability.

Once the fire was brought under control, the crews resumed rescue attempts. One adult was located inside the hospital and transported to Piedmont Eastside Hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.

In addition to the human victim, search teams identified three deceased canine pets inside the home and one feline that was suffering from smoke inhalation. Medical crews were able to treat the cat with supplemental oxygen via a pet mask before turning it over to Gwinnett Animal Welfare & Enforcement for transport to a veterinary hospital for ongoing care.

The fire was reportedly extinguished by 7:49 p.m. The cause for the fire remains unknown at this time.
The Gwinnett County Fire department said the roof of the home collapsed when crews attempted to enter to save the victim.
