Governor Brian Kemp has worked with the State Road and Tollway Authority to allocate $3.46 million in loans and grants to Barrow county highways and traffic systems.

This comes after Governor Kemp and the SRTA announced the approval of a record $26.5 million in Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank loans and grants that will help fund 13 transportation infrastructure projects across the state. Due to a $46 million budget enhancement allocated in the AFY 2025 state budget, this round of GTIB awards is made possible.

Local areas that will be impacted include Barrow county, which has received over $2.4 million in loans and $1 million in grants from the GTIB to fund a new transportation project. The project will connect several cities in Barrow to reduce vehicle collisions and improve the flow of traffic with a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of State Route 53 and Mulberry Road. The project hopes to realign the intersection in order to improve road safety and freight movement. The investments that GTIB have put into this project have accelerated it by three years.

The GTIB takes applications from different areas and cities when determining where to send their grants and weighs each application competitively against one another. They use certain criteria to determine who will receive their help, such as: Transportation, engineering, economic value, matching funds and project feasibility. The same level of intensive decision making goes into loan applications as well.

“SRTA is honored and excited to continue investing in Georgia’s transportation network, this year by infusing more state funds than ever into local projects,” Jannine Miller, Executive Director of the State Road and Tollway Authority said. “Rural communities made up 38% of GTIB applications this year, indicating transportation is important in every corner of our state. With the support of Governor Kemp and the General Assembly, GTIB is helping local governments accelerate project delivery and lower long-term costs for Georgia taxpayers.
