A Gainesville man suffered injuries after igniting cap gun rings inside a glass container.
According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), they were notified of the injury at around 11 p.m. Saturday after personnel with Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) notified them.
NGMC security personnel initially told deputies the victim had been brought to the hospital for injuries from a homemade explosive device.
B.J. Williams with HCSO reiterated it was not a homemade explosive device after a further investigation.
“He was injured in his home by something that did explode, but he was not manufacturing any kind of explosive devices at all,” Williams said. “He placed them [cap gun rings] in a glass container, and then tossed a match inside the container.”
That’s when the container burst onto the 20-year-old man, causing the injuries.
The investigation determined he was inside of his bedroom at his home on Donna Way when he was injured.
When the glass exploded, it caused lacerations to his hands, right bicep, and neck.
The injuries were non-life-threatening according to officials.
Williams did add that one agent from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) responded to the initial call to the home due to the initial reports of a possible explosion device.
“You just got to be extra careful with anything like that inside your house,” Williams said. “Fourth of July is coming up, so I think it’s always a good idea to take extra precautions.”
