Girls golf championships: Bluff's Pressley wins 3A; Jefferson wins team title

LaGRANGE, Ga. — Tuesday’s Class 3A girls' second-round action was as wild as Day 1. 

Much like Monday’s opening round, North Hall and Jefferson volleyed back and forth between the top spot before the Lady Dragons pulled away to capture the Class 3A title at Highland Country Club. 

The Lady Dragons chiseled 10 strokes off their opening round to fire a 165 (340 overall) to best the Lady Trojans by seven strokes. The Lady Trojans fired a Day 2 173 (347 overall), one stroke better than Day 1, with White County posting a 178 (354 overall) to finish third.  

Meanwhile, Cherokee Bluff’s Alisa Pressley, defending Class 4A state champion, distanced herself with back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight to extend her lead to three strokes. Pressley remained steady on the back nine, posting an even-par 36 to finish with 74 and beat Collins (77) overall by four strokes.

Pressley finished the tournament with a seven-over par 151. Collins posted a 155.  

Northwest Whitfield’s Reese Day (162) pulled ahead of North Hall’s Lillie Mathis (165) to finish third, while Mathis was fourth. Jefferson’s Rylee Brown (168) fifth.

Jefferson had three of their four finish in the top 10, Anna Kate Patton finished the tournament with a 172 in seventh, and Addison Taylor posted a 176 to finish eighth. 

White County’s Billikayl Allison (181) was ninth, and North Hall’s Gabriella Jones (182) finished 10th.

In Class 5A, Johns Creek bested McIntosh by 13 strokes to win the title at Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simons Island. The Lady Gladiators shot a 38-over-par 470 to beat McIntosh, who finished with a 51-over-par 483. 

Habersham Central posted a 519 (84-over) to finish fifth overall, Jackson County turned in a 105-over-par 537 to finish seventh, and Gainesville finished with a 117-over-par 549 to finish eighth. 

In the 5A individual tournament, Coffee’s Hannah Powell, who entered Round 2 three strokes behind Day 1 leader, Milton’s Aanya Vantipalli, fired a one-over par 73 to win the individual title. Vantipalli had two bogeys and one double bogey on the back nine to fall out of the lead. Habersham Central’s Addie Maney tied in 11th, turning in a two-day 18-over par 162 as the highest northeast Georgia player.

In the Class 4A girls, Flowery Branch’s Sadie Bishop finished 13th with a two-day total of 170 (+26) at Bentwater Golf Club in Acworth.
