A long-awaited project to alleviate a stormwater drainage issue for a major roadway in Winder is now underway.
The City of Winder has begun construction on the Center Street Stormwater Outfall Project as part of a major effort to reduce flooding and improve drainage in the North Center Street corridor.
Social media posts by the City of Winder shows the project will address long-standing drainage issues, particularly at the North Center Street underpass, by installing a new stormwater system designed to handle runoff more efficiently and protect surrounding properties from water damage.
Winder's City Engineer, Gerard Brewer says, “Flooding has been a problem since the underpass was originally installed. It’s related to the occurrence and elevation of rock in the area, and the inability of the area to drain. This project will relieve those issues.”
Construction is expected to last for about 15 months, through approximately July 2026, with work occurring Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Winder officials add that no work will take place on Sundays.
The social media post says that the Center Street Stormwater Outfall Project will will be completed in phases. Anticipated dates include:
- May through August: South Broad Street/ Highway 81 near CVS and Ruby Tuesday restaurant
- September through December: May Street near McDonald’s and Waffle House
- January 2026: Railroad crossing, North Center Street
- February to March 2026: Maxwell properties
The $7.5 million project is funded through $6 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds.
