An Oakwood man was arrested Thursday after allegedly trying to rob a convenience store in Gainesville.

A release from the Gainesville Police Department said the incident happened in the early morning hours Thursday at the Texaco store on Browns Bridge Road at Pearl Nix Parkway. The suspect, Douglas Arnell Ward, Jr., age 29, allegedly went in the store and pulled out a handgun, demanding money from the clerk.

"The clerk, who was behind bullet resistant barriers, immediately called police," the police department said. "Ward left on foot prior to officers' arrival."

Police were ultimately able to use surveillance footage to identify Ward and later that day located and arrested him on Industrial Boulevard.

As of Friday afternoon, Ward remained in the Hall County Jail without bond on armed robbery, theft and aggravated assault charges among others.
