A Buford man is dead after being arrested in Lumpkin County early Friday morning.
A release from the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office said the incident started when deputies were called to a report of a suspicious person in the parking lot of the Publix on Maxwell Lane off of Ga. 60.
"Once our deputy arrived on scene, the vehicle began driving erratically and sped off toward the north end of the county," the sheriff's office said.
The release said deputies were able to make contact with the suspect, identified as Jacob Karl Wilkerson, age 36, shortly after he sped away and took him into custody.
Wilkerson, however, was then hospitalized, according to the sheriff's office.
"Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the scene and the individual was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he later passed away due to unknown circumstances," the sheriff's office said.
Wilkerson's body was taken to the Lumpkin County Coroner's Office for autopsy. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations was also called, but the sheriff's office said there was no investigation: "since there was no interaction with law enforcement personnel."
Authorities said the case will be given to the Lumpkin County District Attorney's Office after the autopsy is complete.
