A Toccoa man was arrested following a Friday shooting that injured one and caused a bullet to strike the personal vehicle of an off-duty Stephens County Sheriff’s Deputy on Highway 17 Alternative.
A release posted to the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office’s social media pages said officers with the Toccoa Police Department were dispatched to the scene across from the Farm Bureau just after 5 p.m. Callers advised that two cars were blocking multiple lanes of traffic and that a gunshot was fired.
As SCSO deputies, Georgia State Patrol Troopers and rangers with the Department of Natural resources responded to the scene, dispatchers received a call from a man with a gunshot wound who was in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Highway 17 Diner on Big A Road. Emergency units arrived at the scene and transported the man to a local hospital with a gunshot to his right shoulder.
Dispatchers were also notified that an off-duty deputy was driving by with his family when the firearm was discharged, striking his personal vehicle. No one in that vehicle was injured.
While investigating the crime scene near the Farm Bureau, deputies recovered evidence that a firearm was discharged in the roadway. Investigators then issued a “Be On the Lookout” alert for a silver infinity, which was believed to be the vehicle of the suspect in the case. Investigators were also able to determine that a physical altercation had taken place between multiple individuals in the roadway, eventually leading to the shooting.
After following multiple leads to locate the suspect, Donald Sedivy , 70, called law enforcement claiming to be the suspect in the case and wanted to turn himself in. The SCSO’s Crime Suppression Unit then responded to his address on Shady Lane, where a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s was found. Sedivy was taken to the Stephens County Jail without incident .
Sedivy has been charged with four counts of Aggravated Assault, one count of Cruelty to Children in the 2nd Degree, one count of Discharging a Firearm Near Public Highway, and one count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony.
The individual who sustained a gunshot wound is expected to recover from his injuries.
The department said the investigation remains ongoing, and further charges may be forthcoming.
