Jackson Co. voters approve ESPLOST, bond request

Voters in Jackson County approved an Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and a county bond in special elections held Tuesday.

Just over 2,600 voters cast ballots in the county, or just over 4 percent of eligible county voters. The ESPLOST passed with more than 76 percent of the vote and more than 74 percent voting "yes" on the bond question.

Jackson County School System officials had recently said that the two items would be key to moving forward with plans to build a new cluster of schools in the Hoschton area. The elementary, middle and high schools are all expected to be opened by the start of the 2028-2029 school year, at expected costs of hundreds of millions of dollars collectively.

Voters in the City of Commerce also approved a bond question there by just over 58 percent of the vote.
