GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Roswell spoiled Gainesville’s Region 7-5A opener at Ivey-Watson Field with a 6-1 win over the Red Elephants on Monday.
The Hornets (8-5, 2-2 Region 7-5A) scored in all but two innings. Gainesville (2-6, 0-1 Region 7-5A) got its only run in the sixth when Andrew Rice stole home on a double steal.
Dawson Vaughn started and took the loss for the Red Elephants, giving up four runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out seven.
The two teams will resume their three-game series on Wednesday in Roswell.
SOUTH FORSYTH 6,
NORTH FORSYTH 1
The Class 6A sixth-ranked Raiders could not hold an early lead in dropping their Region 6-6A opener on the road.
North Forsyth (7-3, 0-1 Region 6-6A) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run from Ozzie Patterson.
But the War Eagles (7-3, 1-0 Region 6-6A) scored single runs in the second and third to take the lead. They plated four in the fifth to put the game away.
Cohen Rogers was tough on the mound for South Forsyth. Rogers scattered five hits and fanned eight in a complete-game victory.
Brayden Weems took the loss for North Forsyth surrendering six runs (four earned) on three hits and struck out five in 4 1/3 innings.
Seth Dixon had two hits for the Raiders.
The two teams will resume their three-game series on Wednesday in Coal Mountain.
BUFORD 10,
COLLINS HILL 4
The Wolves broke a 4-4 tie with five runs in the sixth inning en route to a Region 8-6A win on the road.
Caleb Griffin highlighted the big inning with a two-run double. Vance Brock also had a RBI hit in the fifth as they took a 9-4 lead. Leo Garcia added a run-scoring single in the seventh.
Buford (4-2, 3-1 Region 8-6A) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and pushed it to 4-1 in the fourth. Collins Hill (8-3, 3-1 Region 8-6A) tied the game with three runs in the fifth.
Ayden Lockett got the win for the Wolves allowing just one hit and zero runs and striking out six in 2 1/3 innings in relief.
Buford pounded out 15 hits on the day with Ryan Johansen collecting three hits. Ian Chafin, Cannon Goldin, Lockett, and Garcia all had two hits for the Wolves.
The two teams will resume their three-game series on Wednesday in Buford.
CHEROKEE BLUFF 12,
EAST FORSYTH 0 (5 inn)
The Class 3A ninth-ranked Bears routed the Broncos on the road in five innings on Monday.
Bluff (4-5) scored in every inning and got home runs from Bubba Coleman, a two-run blast in the first, and Bryce Fontenot, a two-run shot in the fourth.
Coleman drove in four in the game with Ethan England and Fontenot each having two RBI. Owen Redwine had two hits and two RBI and KT Thompson also had two hits for the Bears.
Gabe Gowder scattered three hits and three walks and struck out three in a complete-game effort to get the win for Cherokee Bluff.
Wyatt Barden took the loss for East Forsyth (7-3). Barden gave up four runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings. Trey Farr, Zach Aschoff, and Jake Adamson each had one hit for the Broncos.
Cherokee Bluff next will travel to Class 4A ninth-ranked Kell on Tuesday.
East Forsyth plays host to Class 5A third-ranked Seckinger on Wednesday.
HABERSHAM CENTRAL 5,
MADISON COUNTY 3
The Raiders scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and then snuffed out a Madison County rally in the seventh to snap a two-game losing streak.
Habersham Central (6-4) led 3-0 after the second inning on a RBI double from Mason Witt in the first and getting a Spencer Frady sacrifice fly and Maverick Chitwood RBI single in the second.
Madison County cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth and then tied the game at 3 in the sixth on a balk by the Raiders.
In the bottom of the sixth, Hudson Gailey doubled in a run to regain the lead and Tyler Rothell followed with a RBI single for Habersham Central.
Carter Crane earned the win for Habersham Central giving up just one run on four hits in four innings. He fanned nine and walked none.
Habersham Central next will play host to Jefferson on Wednesday.
