The Georgia Department of Education has named Gainesville High School as an Advanced Placement Honor School.

The recognition is given to schools with high percentages of students taking and excelling in advanced placement classes. The school was specifically recognized for having a high percentage of African American and Hispanic students taking and scoring highly in AP exams, and for having a high number of students taking AP math, science and computer science exams.

"The success of our program is a testament to the hard work of students, the dedication of teachers and the support of the entire school community," Gainesville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Williams said. "This recognition as an AP Honor School underscores out commitment to providing students with access to challenging coursework that prepares them for success in college and beyond."

The school system announced the recognition on Friday.
