What's Happening This Weekend: Labor Day edition

As you're gearing up for the long Labor Day weekend, you'll have plenty of events to choose from to enjoy your extra day off.

Here is this week's list of events around Northeast Georgia:

Weekend Events August 30 – September 2

LABOR DAY CELEBRATIONS

Event Name: Homer’s 52nd Labor Day Festival, Homer
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 31 – Sunday, September 1
Event Location: Downtown Homer
Event Details: For this holiday weekend, come to Home to find lots of craft and food vendors, bouncy houses, horses, a train for the kids, local talent and Saturday Night Street Dance! There is a parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Saturday evening a performance by “The Splitz Band” will have you singing and dancing. Come enjoy all the activities, live performances and vendors all weekend long!

Event Name: Labor Day Car Show, Dawsonville
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 31, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Event Location: Georgia Racing Hall of Fame (GRHOF), 415 Highway 53E, Dawsonville
Event Details: Join us for this annual Labor Day Car Show. See all kinds of classic, and classically cool, cars. Prizes will be awarded. There will also be food and craft vendors, as well!

Event Name: “Meet Me at the Hill” Car Show, Sugar Hill
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 31, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Event Location: The Landing, 4985 W. Broad St., Sugar Hill
Event Details: See some unique cars, enjoy local vendors, and cool off at the splash pad. There will also be a raffle, as well as awards given to the car owners. All funds raised will go to “Beyond the Ribbon” to help those diagnosed with cancer in the local community.

Event Name: Mountain Heritage Festival, Blairsville
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 31 – Sunday, September 1, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. 
Event Location: 80 Blue Ridge St., Blairsville
Event Details: Enjoy good ‘ol fashioned fun this Labor Day Weekend. Enjoy 60+ vendors, arts and crafts vendors, food and live demonstrations that will leave you feeling like a bonafide Appalachian. Vendors will be around the downtown Blairsville Square while music and demonstrations will be at the Butt-Mock House.

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

Event Name: Folk Pottery and Arts Festival, Sautee Nacoochee
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 31, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Event Location: Sautee Nacoochee Cultural Center , 283 Hwy 255 N., Sautee Nacoochee
Event Details: Come enjoy folk pottery, as well as learning more about the art! There will be over 50 artists, demonstrations, live music, food trucks, a raffle and art galleries to view. Explore the fascinating world of folk pottery. Demonstrations will include pottery, blacksmithing, butter churning, basketry and folk skills. For details, go to www.sauteenacoocheecenter.org

Event Name: Splash Night and Outdoor Movie in Sugar Hill
Event Date & Time: Friday, August 30, 6 – 9 p.m.
Event Location: Sugar Hill City Hall, 5039 W. Broad St., Sugar Hill
Event Details: Take the kids to the splash pad and then stay for a family-friendly movie that begins at sundown. Enjoy local food trucks, artists and musicians at this event. Get details at www.thebowlatsugarhill.com

Event Name: Movies Alfresco, Cumming
Event Date & Time: Friday, August 30, 8 – 10 p.m. 
Event Location: Lou Sobh Amphitheater, Cumming City Center, Cumming  
Event Details: This free outdoor movie is for everyone to enjoy. The movie will be “Migration.” Free admission and parking. No outside coolers or food. Your favorite snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. Just bring a lawn chair and/or blanket to sit on. All minors must be accompanied by an adult.     

Event Name: IPRA World Championship Rodeo, Cumming 
Event Date & Time: Friday, August 30 – Sunday, September 1, 8 p.m.
Event Location: Cumming Fairgrounds, 235 Castleberry Road, Cumming
Event Details: This annual Labor Day event features Bull Riding, Bare Back Riding, Barrell Racing, Cowgirl Breakaway Roping, Steer Wrestling, Bronc Riding and more! Gates open 2 hours before the event begins. 

PERFORMANCES & CONCERTS

Event Name: A1A Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band, Gainesville
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 31, 7 p.m.
Event Location: Boot Barn Hall 293 W Academy St SW, Gainesville
Event Details: A1A is the official Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band, born in 1991. They’ve been recognized by Jimmy Buffett himself after winning a “Sound Alike” concert. They were featured in Jimmy Buffett’s MTV video, as well as performed with Jimmy Buffett himself! Get your tickets at www.bootbarnhall.com

Event Name: Music in the Branch, Flowery Branch
Event Date & Time: Sunday, September 1, 6:30 – 8 p.m.
Event Location: 5603 Mitchell St., Flowery Branch
Event Details: The City of Flowery Branch is calling all music lovers! Enjoy a free concert in downtown Flowery Branch while enjoying a delicious bite from one of the food trucks. This month’s featured group is, “Let There Be Rock.”

Event Name: These Crowded Streets, Dave Matthews Tribute, Dahlonega
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 31, 7:30 p.m.
Event Location: Holly Theater, Dahlonega
Event Details: This group is advertised as being as true to Dave Matthews Band as possible. They bring the same vibe, energy and sounds of the original Dave Matthews Band. They will play all your favorite 90’s DMB hits, authentically recreated with saxophone, fiddle and acoustics. Come sing and dance along! Get your tickets at www.hollytheater.com

Event Name: Band X of Atlanta, Cumming
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 31, 8 p.m. 
Event Location: Lou Sobh Amphitheater, Cumming City Center, Cumming  
Event Details: Free concert for the whole community. This group is high energy, adrenaline charged and is like no other party band in the nation! They have toured with national acts and they are known for their acting, dancing and interacting with the audience. No coolers, outside food. Just bring a lawn chair or blanket and your friendly dogs on a leash.  

Event Name: “9 to 5” Musical, Sugar Hill
Event Date & Time: Friday, August 30 through Sunday, September 8, Various Times
Event Location: Players Guild, 5039 W Broad St., Sugar Hill
Event Details: This musical, 9 to 5, is based on the 1980 hit movie with all the music and lyrics of Dolly Parton. This is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge. It’s thought provoking and a little romantic. Get your tickets at www.ci.ovationtix.com/36627

EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS

Event Name: Back to the Castle Day, Gainesville
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 31, 6 – 9 p.m.
Event Location: Elachee Nature Science Center, Gainesville
Event Details: Calling all wizards, witches and muggles alike! Join this magical journey through the stars at this Harry Potter-themed Telescope and Planetarium Program! There will be dress up fun, telescope and planetarium viewing, treats and refreshments, as well as some educational information, as well. Tickets are $10 per person and recommended for ages 8 and up. Event Name: Solar Observing, Anna Ruby Falls, Helen
Event Date & Time: Saturday, August 31, 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.
Event Location: 3455 Anna Ruby Falls Rd., Helen
Event Details: Drop in and learn more about the sun and sunspots. Expert astronomers will be setting up telescopes used for solar viewing and offering educational fun. Bring comfortable walking shoes and your questions and curiosity about what we see in the daytime sky! Meet at the Anna Ruby Falls Parking Lot.
