Roughly 200 gallons of a corrosive chemical was leaked at Predictive Food Safety Thursday morning.
The leak was caused by a forklift puncturing a container of peracetic acid (PAA). The chemical drifted down the property in the direction of a storm drain.
Hall County Fire Rescue and five units from Gainesville Fire Department responded at around 9:20 a.m.
The call initially came in at 9 a.m. across the road at U.S. Pipe Fabrication when employees complained of symptoms associated with chemical exposure.
One of those employees was transported for further evaluation.
The call was “upgraded” when the first arriving unit located where the odor was emitting from.
Responding units did start to mitigate the spill and prevented it from spreading any further.
At this time, it is unknown how much leaked into the nearby storm drain.
Gainesville Public Works arrived with sand to put on the remaining pools of the chemical.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was contacted due to the exposure to a water source.
No personnel was injured and the scene will be handed over to the EPA.
