Mother Nature may have delayed most of the games around Northeast Georgia Friday night, but she didn't wash them out.
Three area games were finished on Saturday; Wheeler forfeited its game against North Forsyth, and the other 13 games waited for the weather to clear and finished late Friday night.
Our hope is that Mother Nature will stay asleep this week and that Week 2 will go smoothly.
Three games will be on the Jacobs Media airwaves and streaming live on AccessWDUN.com. To follow scores and more this week, follow our Friday Game Night X for scores, stories and highlights.
Thursday, August 22
Gainesville at Moody, Ala—The first-ever meeting between the two schools could be one of the best matchups of Week 2. Gainesville coach Josh Niblett returns to his home state of Alabama for the first time in a regular-season game. Moody is coming off its best season in program history and will open the 2024 campaign against the Red Elephants on Thursday. Gainesville showed out after the weather delay on Friday, scoring four touchdowns in the third quarter to blow past Marietta. Big Red's defense is tough to handle, and now it looks like the offense will be a load. Keep an eye on this matchup Thursday. The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake (Click to listen live).
Friday, August 23
Buford at Benedictine—What to expect in this one is a question for somebody who knows more than us. After seeing Rabun Gap take Benedictine to the woodshed last week, 42-17, the Cadets may not be the team we expected, or Rabun Gap is just that good. Regardless, they'll roll into Tom Riden Stadium on Friday looking to turn things around. Meanwhile, Buford, who lost to Milton last week, will be looking to get back on track after a lackluster offensive performance. Expect the Wolves to lean on their defense as they continue retooling the offense, which held No. 1 Milton to 13 points last week. But last week's Benedictine outcome has us wondering what's up in Savannah. The game can be heard live on WDUN AM 550 (Click to listen live).
Jefferson at Jackson County—This will be the first meeting since a 55-0 Jefferson win in 2019 and only the 11th time the two have ever played each other. The Dragons lead the series 10-0. Last week, Jefferson's offense struggled to find the endzone while producing just 132 total yards in the loss to Marist. They also played most of the game without starting QB Gavin Markey. Meanwhile, Jackson County's start was slow, but the Panthers finished strong, outscoring 31-0 and racking up 384 yards of offense. Could this be the year Jackson County gets its first win in the series? Maybe, but don't count out the Dragons. The game can be heard live on FM 102.9 WDUN (Click to listen live).
Oglethorpe County at East Hall – When the weather delayed the second half of the Banks County-East Hall to Saturday, it was exactly what the Vikings needed. Trailing on Friday, the Vikings rallied from behind to beat the Leopards and start the season 1-0. Now, they'll face an Oglethorpe team that can put points on the board. The Patriots lost the Social Circle in a shootout, 48-41. Could it be a big defensive test for the Vikings? Yes. The other question is, can the Vikings offense keep up? The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake (Click to listen live).
