Forsyth County declared Aug. 31 as Overdose Awareness Day at commissioners meeting.
The American Medical Association (AMA) defines addiction as a “treatable chronic medical disease.”
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that in 2023, roughly 110,000 deaths were caused by overdosing. Over 2,600 of those were in the state of Georgia, or roughly seven a day.
The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners approved the new day at an Aug. 15 meeting.
In a press release, officials said: “The Board of Commissioners encourages all Forsyth County residents to learn about this disease and support the individuals and families affected by it.”
