Governor Brian Kemp extended the suspension of Rabun County Sheriff Chad Nichols on Monday.

This comes after charges of sexual battery, public indecency, and violation of oath by a public officer.

Nichols was arrested on May 31 after turning himself in.

Kemp issued an executive order just days later on June 3, appointing a committee to investigate Nichols.

The committee consisted of Attorney General Chris Carr, Morgan County Sheriff Robert Markley, and Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum.

On June 14, the committee recommended that Nichols be suspended from office. That same day, Kemp suspended Nichols for 60 days.

The suspension is now extended by 30 days until Sept. 10.

Major Beth Darnell with the Rabun County Sheriff's Office has been the acting in-charge officer.
