One person was killed Saturday afternoon in a multi-vehicle, wrong-way collision in southern Hall County.
Gainesville resident Juan de Dios Ramirez, 63, died at the scene after reportedly causing the accident on Hwy. 53 near Strickland Road, in the greater Chestnut Mountain area.
The State Patrol says the Gainesville resident was driving a Honda CR-V eastbound in the westbound lanes of the divided highway, eventually striking a GMC Acadia head-on just after 4:30 p.m..
The GMC overturned before coming to a stop. A third vehicle then swerved to avoid the collision, traveling off the roadway and striking a curb.
The driver of the GMC was identified by the State Patrol as 52-year-old Maryland resident Kyle Fendlay. Fendlay, his wife and their four children all suffered minor injuries in the collision, and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The driver of the third vehicle was uninjured.
Troopers believe that Ramirez may have been impaired at the time of the crash. The westbound lanes of Winder Hwy were closed for approximately 2 hours for the on-scene investigation.
