Forsyth County is set to begin a new urban deer management program after the board of commissioner’s approval on Tuesday.

The program looks to address the overpopulation of white-tailed deer in the southern part of the county.

The program will include two free archery hunts from dawn to dusk on Sep. 21-22 and Oct. 26-27.

The hunts will take place on the site of the county’s Shakerag Water Reclamation facility at 545 Kemp Road.

“Having received a number of complaints from residents in the south Forsyth area about deer destroying their landscaping and deer-related vehicle accidents, we reached out the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to discuss options that have been successful not only in Georgia but also across the United States,” Assistant County Manager Tony Tarnacki said.

The first hunt in September is intended to allow youth participation and will allow 16 Forsyth County residents between the ages of 10 and 17 sign up when accompanied by an adult.

The second dates in October will be for residents 18 and older.

Applications will open for both hunts at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 20 and hunters will be picked on a first come, first serve basis. A pre-hunt safety meeting will also be required.

Forsyth County also said that a CivicRec account is required to register and can be set up in advance at: https://secure.rec1.com/GA/forsyth-county-ga/catalog

Forsyth County is faced with white-tailed deer overpopulation and will hold two hunting dates to help alleviate the issue.
