Baseball: Owings resigns Red Elephants' baseball position

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Now, neither of the two men who have been at the head of the Gainesville baseball program will be with the team when the 2024-25 school year begins in August.

The program's Director of Baseball Operations, Micah Owings, a 2002 Gainesville graduate, officially resigned from his position on Thursday pursue other coaching opportunities. The announcement was made by the school.

“We thank Micah for the time he spent with our student-athletes, and for his commitment to not only being a Red Elephant, but building on the legacy he left as part of Big Red,” Gainesville Athletic Director Adam Lindsey said in a statement. “We will move forward quickly to name a new leader of our current and growing herd.”

Owings had been listed as the head coach after Cris Carpenter retired in April while his brother, Jon Mark Owings, is listed as the assistant coach for Red Elephants.

In their lone year at the helm of the Red Elephant baseball program, Owings and fellow Gainesville Carpenter led GHS to a state playoff berth, the first since 2018.
