An orthopedic surgeon in Athens was awarded the Jack C. Hughston Physician of the Year Award from the Georgia Athletic Trainer’s Association (GATA) on June 5.

Dr. Robert Hancock, M.D., works with Piedmont Athens Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine and was recognized for his dedication to student athletes around the Athens area, including those at the University of Georgia.

“I’m honored to receive this year’s physician of the year award from the association,” said Hancock. “It is incredibly rewarding to work with student athletes, helping them return to the field or the court after an injury.”

Hancock specializes in sports injuries, with concentration on the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle. He has been a consultant with the University of Georgia Athletic Association since 1995

“Piedmont Athens Regional is proud to have Dr. Hancock on our medical staff,” said Piedmont Athens Regional CEO Michael Burnett.”

GATA has more than 1,000 licensed athletic trainers in their organization throughout collegiate programs, high school sports, physician offices, military bases, and rehabilitation clinics.
