How about an off-week during the Georgia High School football playoffs?
Well, coaches and teams that make the semifinals this year can thank ESPN for the extra week of practice.
In response to ESPN’s scheduling of the annual Georgia-Georgia Tech rivalry game on November 29 at 7:30 p.m., the GHSA has decided to take that week off and push the final two rounds of the playoffs to December 6 (semifinals). The finals will run December 16-18.
GHSA executive director Robin Hines told the AJC's Todd Holcomb that for the first time since 1947, high school football will not be played after Thanksgiving since the GHSA began running the playoffs.
Over the years, head coaches around the state have always targeted the day after Thanksgiving, usually the quarterfinals. However, because the fourth Thursday falls later this year, the semifinals were slated to be played on Nov. 29.
The high school season for most will kick off on August 16.
