GAINESVILLE, Ga. — The home course advantage never quite panned out for Gainesville in the Class 6A state tournament.
The Red Elephants finished seventh, firing a 19-over par 625 at the Chattahoochee Golf Course over the two-day event.
Gainesville began Tuesday’s final round 22 shots off the pace set by Blessed Trinity and made up three strokes with the sixth-lowest score (297) on Tuesday. But it wasn’t enough as Lakeside-Evans shot a tournament-best 291 to finish at 592 overall (3-over par) to capture the title.
Lakeside edged out second place Roswell (596), third place Johns Creek (602) while Blessed Trinity fell to fourth (603) after shooting a 309 in the final round. Creekview took fifth with a two-day total of 605.
Junior Henry Kopydlowski paced Gainesville with a 6-over 148, good for a tie for sixth in the individual tournament.
Lakeside-Evans sophomore Hamilton Coleman won the individual state title shooting a 5-under 139 to hold off North Atlanta senior Pierce Adamson, who finished in second with a 1-under 143.
