The Gainesville Department of Water Resources (DWR) has stopped a sewer spill into Lake Lanier.
A press release from the City of Gainesville Wednesday afternoon says that the spill was located and remedied at around 10 p.m. Tuesday, May 14 when an alarm from a sewer pumping station sounded. Department of Water Resources (DWR) officials discovered a sanitary sewer discharge near the 500 block of Bayberry Crossing Drive entering Lake Lanier.
City officials say the station is under renovation and one of the contractor’s pumps malfunctioned and caused the discharge. The pumps at the station were manually started and flow restored by midnight.
Gainesville DWR estimates about 6,000 gallons reached the lake. The area of the spill was assessed and no dead or stressed aquatic life were found. All field parameters for water quality were within state water quality standards.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division was notified Wednesday and signs were posted.
