A South Carolina man was arrested Monday after reportedly leading authorities on a chase that ended with a crash on Interstate 85 in Franklin County.
A report from the Georgia State Patrol said a trooper tried to pull over a beige 1993 Toyota Camry for traffic violations on the northbound side of the interstate when the car sped away. The trooper then chased the vehicle and performed a PIT maneuver near Exit 173 at Ga. 17 in Lavonia.
That maneuver led to the Camry crashing, overturning several times and leaving both people inside the car with what authorities called non-life-threatening injuries. Both were taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment and later released.
The driver of the car, Glen Richard Smith, Jr., age 49 of Inman, South Carolina, was arrested and booked into the Franklin County Detention Center. State patrol officials say he faces charges of fleeing and possession of methamphetamine.
A 34-year-old woman from North Carolina who was a passenger in the Camry was not arrested. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office aided the state patrol in Monday's chase.
