A Mount Airy man is behind bars after authorities said he stole a pickup truck in Cornelia Monday.
A report from the Cornelia Police Department said the incident started when an officer was called to a job site on Jones Street where a man reported that his 2020 Chevrolet Silverado had been stolen. The victim told the officer that a white male had stolen a jacket containing keys to the truck and drove away.
The truck was located shortly after at Cornelia City Park and police then set up a perimeter to try to locate the suspect in the theft. That suspect was eventually identified as William Gooch of Mount Airy.
Gooch was later found by authorities on Kingston Hill Drive and arrested. He's been booked into the Habersham County Detention Center on just under $14,000 bond for charges of theft by taking and first-degree burglary.
Several law enforcement agencies including the Habersham County Sheriff's Office assisted Cornelia police in the case.
