Stephens County Residents will be able to buy and sell local fruits and vegetables harvested by area farmers at the Eastanollee Cannery.
A Stephens County School System Facebook post said the Local Growers Market will be on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the cannery at 582 Eastanollee School Road, Eastanollee.
There is no fee to sell homegrown items, but sellers must visit the cannery to fill out an application and review the rules and policies in advance.
“We hope to begin the market as soon as gardens start coming in and will announce the opening day as soon as it's confirmed. The purpose of this market will be for local farmers to have a place to sell and purchase homegrown vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, plants, and eggs. This market will not include arts and crafts, processed foods like jams, jellies, pies, baked goods, and canned items. Sellers will not be required to stay all day as many will have limited quantities and may sell out early,” Manager Richard Johnson said.
Brad Randall’s construction class students at Stephens County High School recently transformed a shipping container into a shelter to display items for the Local Growers Market.
“The students have done an excellent job transforming the shelter. It looks great and will be useful rain or shine. I’m excited about this market and the service we will be able to provide our local farmers and community,” Johnson said.
The Cannery offers food processing equipment and sells meats, cheeses, dried food items and more. Cannery hours are Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and closed Friday – Sunday. For updates follow the Eastanollee Cannery Facebook page.
