A not so lucky St. Patrick's Day for Public Works and Emergency Services crews in Gwinnett County on Sunday, as gas and water lines leaks were reported along Dacula Road NE in Dacula.
A release from Gwinnett Fire and Rescue offcials says their firefighters were called to reports of possible gas leaks around the 500 block of Dacula Road Sunday afternoon after 1:00 p.m. Crews arrived and reported the presence of an active gas leak and water leak that appeared to originate from beneath Dacula Road.
Fire crews immediately took protective measures by closing Dacula Road, requesting the department’s HazMat response team. Upon the arrival of HazMat technicians, firefighters evacuated one local restaurant.as other restaurants were already closed for business at the time. Hebron Church was advised by responders to shelter in place during operations.
Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources (DWR) responded to the scene to assist with securing the water leak. Firefighters were able to secure the water leak before the arrival of DWR. Buford Gas responded to begin repairs on the gas leak. During operations local traffic was detoured from Dacula Road onto Hebron Church Road to secure the hot zone.
Gwinnett Fire and Rescue officials say no injuries were reported. While the gas main repairs were completed just before 11:00 p.m. Sunday, DPW then took over the scene for repairs to the water lines in the area, and were working on them through the overnight hours.
