The Gwinnett County Police Department will partner with the DEA for the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative on Saturday, April 27.

The event  will provide community members the opportunity to safely dispose of potentially dangerous prescription medications at collection sites around the county. The initiative is a response to a rising number of overdose deaths.

“Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue that can lead to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse,” a release from the department read. “Many teenagers that abuse prescription drugs get them from family or friend’s home medicine cabinets. Unused drugs flushed down the toilet can contaminate the water supply. The proper disposal of unused drugs can save lives and protect the environment.”

Those who have tablets, capsules, patches, and other forms of prescription drugs can drop them off at collection sites for proper disposal. Liquids, syringes, sharps, and other drugs will not be accepted at any of the sites.

Police Headquarters, the department’s six precincts, and Coolray Field will accept items from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.  People who want to drop off items can show up during this time frame without an appointment.

Each site will be supervised by a Gwinnett County Police Officer. People who drop off  medications will not be asked any questions about their medical history or how they came into possession of the medications.
