AccessWDUN sat down with Hall County Animal Shelter Director Trey Garcia to learn more about the current urgent adoptions list.
The shelter has been undergoing an HVAC installation and renovation, which has resulted in limited space for animals at the selter, along with restricting access to certain areas of the shelter, according to Garcia.
"The urgent list is basically animals who it could be for time issues, they've been there for an extended period of time, or we're just low on space for a variety of reasons," Garcia said. "So this urgent list is just a call for the community because our options are running low for the shelter ... We've been very fortunate, since we started the urgent list, we've had 100% either go to adoptions or rescue groups."
Last week, the animal shelter had 9 dogs on the urgent list. Although the adoptions came down to the wire, the shelter was able to get every dog adopted before their deadline.
The shelter now is down to two dogs on their urgent list, Baxter and Koa, both of which can be viewed on the animal shelter's website. Those interested can also call the shelter at (678) 450-1587.
"We get animals for a variety reasons," Garcia said. "It could be owner surrenders, right now what we're seeing is with the economy, that's been a big issue, and a lot owners can't afford the animals anymore. So we try to work with them to see what we can do to help them out on that end. It could be just random stray animals that just ran away from the homes and no owners that came forward. Animal Control, it could be variety issues there. It could be welfare issues, hoarding issues or just your typical animals running loose."
The shelter is hoping to have the HVAC rennovations completed by May or June, at which time they will return to normal operations.
"I also want to encourage people to check out our foster program, which is another great way to help out," Garcia said. "So if you're not able to adopt these animals, but you maybe will foster them through Doggie Day Out [or] Weekend Warriors."
