Arrest made in Athens shooting that left one child dead

A child was killed and two other people were injured in a shooting Friday afternoon in East Athens-Clarke County, and an arrest has been made.

With the assistance of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, ACCPD took Julian Cubillos, 17, of Lawrenceville, into custody Friday at approximately 6:37 p.m., according to authorities.

Cubillos has been charged with two counts of murder (malice and felony murder), four counts of aggravated assault and violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.

Additional warrants were obtained for Jayden Brown, 16, of Athens, and Dakious Echols, 18, of Athens. Both are charged with two counts of murder (malice and felony murder), four counts of
aggravated assault and violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act as well.

Originally it was indicated that an adult was injured by the gunfire, however, authorities have since clarified that the adult was not injured.

“I am sickened by this heinous crime, and my heart aches for the grieving family, friends and loved ones who are suffering such a tragic loss,” ACCPD Chief of Police Jerry Saulters said. “The Athens Clarke County Police Department will dedicate our full strength and resources to bring the killers to justice.”

A child was killed and two other people were injured in a shooting Friday afternoon in East Athens-Clarke County.

A release from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said authorities responded just after 5:30 p.m. to the shooting at Hallmark Mobile Home Park on Spring Valley Road.

Authorities found three people who had been shot at the home: one adult and two children. One of the children died from their injuries, while the second child and the adult were both treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
