A Demorest man took his own life after an overnight pursuit Sunday with Clarkesville, Demorest and Habersham County authorities.

Clarkesville Police initiated a traffic stop at approximately 10 p.m. Sunday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. William Charles Lamberti, 48, of Demorest, refused to stop, leading police on a chase.

Units with the Habersham County Sheriff's Office and the Demorest Police Department also joined the pursuit.

A deputy with HCSO performed a PIT maneuver on Lamberti's truck, which reportedly ended the pursuit near Highway 115 and Habersham Mills Road.

Lamberti then shot himself while inside his truck, according to officials with the GBI.

EMS crewmembers treated Lamberti and transported him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials have indicated there was a passenger in the truck with Lamberti, however, no information regarding that passenger has been provided.

The Georgia State Patrol is also reportedly investigating the incident, due to the use of a PIT maneuver. Lamberti's body is being taken to the GBI Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy.
