A Clarkesville man was arrested Wednesday night after he hit a pedestrian in the parking lot of a business in Cornelia.

Georgia State Patrol officials said Howell Reese Mendenhall, 22 of Clarkesville was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Impala east on private property located at 250 Furniture Drive just before 10 p.m.

The pedestrian identified as Nereida Luviano, 36, of Gainesville, was sitting on a bench in front of a business. Mendenhall allegedly failed to stop when exiting the travel lane, traveled across the main traffic path, struck Luviano on the sidewalk and then hit the business.

Luviano sustained serious injuries and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Mendenhall was uninjured and he was charged with driving under the influence.

Mendenhall was arrested by GSP and taken to the Habersham County Sherriff's Office. He was later released on a $2,000 bond.
