Posted 2:17PM on Thursday 29th February 2024 ( 8 months ago )

One student was arrested and another student was hospitalized after a stabbing incident Thursday at Brookwood High School in south Gwinnett County.

Brookwood Principal Brett Savage sent an email to the school community about the incident Thursday afternoon.

"One of our students has been arrested after police say he stabbed a classmate in one of our restrooms," Savage said. "The student who was stabbed was transported to the hospital. Because of student privacy laws, I cannot share additional information about his condition, but I know you join me in wishing the student a speedy recovery."

Gwinnett County Public Schools Spokesman Bernard Watson told AccessWDUN the victim was stabbed multiple times. He also said the suspect in the case was arrested in a nearby neighborhood about 30 minutes after the incident.

The student accused of stabbing the victim in the incident is facing criminal charges and "maximum school disciplinary consequences," according to Savage.

"As is the case in this incident, those who engage in this type of behavior will face appropriate criminal charges," Savage said. "I want to reassure you that we are taking this situation seriously. The incident was handled promptly and thoroughly."

Savage said Brookwood High remained a safe place and that the vast majority of students follow school rules.

The full letter from Savage is as follows:

"Dear Brookwood High School Parents,

The safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority. With that in mind, I want to update you about the troubling incident I shared with you earlier today.

One of our students has been arrested after police say he stabbed a classmate in one of our restrooms. The student who was stabbed was transported to the hospital. Because of student privacy laws, I cannot share additional information about his condition, but I know you join me in wishing the student a speedy recovery.

To be clear, what happened today is unacceptable. The student accused of attacking their classmate is facing serious criminal charges and maximum school disciplinary consequences. Violence against students and staff will not be tolerated at Brookwood High School. As is the case in this incident, those who engage in this type of behavior will face appropriate criminal charges. I want to reassure you that we are taking this situation seriously. The incident was handled promptly and thoroughly.

Despite what happened today, Brookwood High remains a safe place. We must never lose sight of the fact that the vast majority of our students follow school rules and play a critical role in keeping our school safe.
