A Blairsville man was killed Sunday afternoon in a confrontation with Union County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said deputies were dispatched at around 3:20 p.m. for a domestic dispute with a gun involving Wendall Cross, 85, of Blairsville.

When Union County deputies arrived at the home on Wesley Mountain Road they attempted to negotiate with Cross, who was armed.

Cross allegedly fired his gun in the direction of deputies while they commanded him to put his gun down.

According to the GBI, deputies returned fire and shot Cross.

Cross was rendered aid by deputies and taken to a local hospital by Union County EMS. He died as a result of his injuries.

No deputies were injured in the shooting.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the file will be given to the Union County District Attorney’s Office for review.
