The Lawrenceville Arts Commission selected  Atlanta-based artist  Leah Abucayan to create a "Welcome/Entrance Mural" along Crogan Street, adjacent to McCray’s Tavern on the Lawrenceville Square.

The mural design was approved unanimously by the City Council on November 15, 2023.

Abucayan holds a Graphic Design degree from the Academy of Art University and works as a designer at the CNN Digital Art Department. Her portfolio includes murals, chalk art, digital design, product design, and book illustrations.

"I'm so grateful and honored to be able to add color and life to the city of Lawrenceville through my art!” Abucayan said in a release. “This mural encapsulates the essence of a beautiful day in Lawrenceville, and I hope you have one after seeing this wall.”

Abucayan’s design was selected among numerous submissions for its uplifting and inspiring message.

The $25,000 project cost includes the mural proposal, scissor lift rental, materials, and maintenance for the next five years, according to the arts commission.

“Abucayan's journey with the Lawrenceville Arts Commission began in 2022 when she participated in an open call for the Community Participation Mural along Jackson Street,” the release said. “While she was unable to commit to that project due to time constraints, the commission was enamored with her proposal. As a result, she was invited to submit a proposal for the new location, aligning with the desire for a vibrant design which was, ‘happy, uplifting, inspiring and colorful.’”

The Lawrenceville Art Commission collaborated with the artist for several months to refine the proposal before it was presented to the Mayor and Council at the November Council Work Session.

“As we celebrate the triumph of our Lawrenceville Blooms Community Mural, I eagerly anticipate the unveiling of yet another masterpiece that will warmly embrace all who enter our splendid city,” Mayor David Still said. “My heartfelt gratitude goes to the Lawrenceville Arts Commission for their unwavering dedication in selecting art that truly captures the essence and spirit of Lawrenceville."

The mural installation is slated to begin in March.
