Baseball: WHall rallies late to beat Chestatee; Buford wins opener

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — West Hall rallied from an 8-3 deficit to beat Chestatee, 9-8, in both teams’ season openers on Tuesday at the Lynn Cottrell Complex.

Brett Sturm singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, then closed out the win on the mound in relief, pitching the final two innings and striking out five.

The Spartans scored one in the first and two in the third to grab a quick 3-0 lead. But Chestatee plated four in the bottom of the third and four in the sixth to take the lead. Colton Wilbanks had a two-run double and Dylan Thompson had two hits and an RBI for the War Eagles (0-1).

West Hall tied the game at 8 with a 5-run seventh inning as John Kendrick drove in two on a single and Marcus Pugh doubled in a run.

Thompson took the loss for Chestatee allowing one run in 1 1/3 innings in relief.

Senior Ethan Murray homered and drove in four runs to lead the Wolves to an opening day win at Gerald McQuaig Field on Tuesday.

Senior Nate Taylor got the start and the win pitching two scoreless innings while striking out three. 

Buford scored single runs in the first and second and then Murray jacked a three-run bomb in the fourth with two outs to push the lead to 5-1. South Forsyth got two in the fifth to close to 5-3 but the Wolves got an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth.

Senior Damian Brown came on in the fifth inning and pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to get the save for Buford.

The Wolves will travel to Calhoun on Saturday.
