Basketball: Union and Rabun sweep 1st round games in Battle of the States

HIAWASSEE, Ga. — The Class 2A fourth-ranked Union County boys won their second straight game with a dominating 90-51 win over Coosa on Friday in the first round of the Battle of the States.

Union County jumped out to a huge 22-6 lead after the first quarter and then extended its lead to 51-19 by halftime. The Panthers took a 70-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Panthers (9-2) had five players in double figures, led by Hayden Hughes with 23 points. Vince Marevka had 17 points for Union County. Holden Payne and Kaden Combs each added 12 points and Ethan Hogsed had 10 for the panthers.

Union County next will take on arch-rival Rabun County in the semifinals on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.


RABUN COUNTY BOYS 81,
HAYESVILLE (NC) 42

The Class A D1 sixth-ranked Wildcats used a huge first half to advance in the Battle of the States.

Rabun County (11-2) held the Yellow Jackets to just 6 points in the opening period and then the offense exploded for 25 points in the second to run out to a 42-19 lead.

The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 57-36 by the end of the third quarter but the Wildcats outscored Hayesville 24-6 in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Hayesville will play Coosa in the consolation game at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.


UNION COUNTY GIRLS, 74,
COOSA 45

The Lady Panthers also advanced to the semifinals with a dominating win in the first round of the Battle of the States.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Union County (7-4).

They will take on arch-rival Rabun County on Saturday at 4 p.m.


RABUN COUNTY GIRLS 53,
HAYESVILLE (NC) 34

Adelyn Thompson scored 17 points to pace the Lady Wildcats (7-4) to the win. She added 4 assists and 3 steals.

Jacie McCall had 12 points and 4 rebounds and Chloe Erlewine added 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals for Rabun County.

They will take on arch-rival Union County in the semifinals on Saturday.
