Four arrested after allegedly using counterfeit currency at Lavonia businesses

Four men were arrested in Lavonia after they allegedly used counterfeit U.S. currency at two local businesses. 

The Lavonia Police Department  shared in a Facebook post Tuesday  Reece Smith, Michael Buchanan, Abdul Sow, and Khadim Hanne  were traveling from the Atlanta area and reportedly used the forged money at a local restaurant. An employee noticed the currency was counterfeit and called 911. 

The four men then went to a convenience store across the street from the restaurant. LPD officers in the area were able to detain three of the suspects, while the fourth ran to another local business and reportedly attempted to flush the bills down the toilet. 

All four were arrested and transported to the Franklin County Detention Center. The case remains under investigation and information will be forwarded to the U.S. Secret Service for follow up and possible federal charges, according to the post. 

Charges at this time include:

-Forgery First Degree-Four Counts

-Possession of Marijuana w/ Intent to Distribute-One Count

-Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of Certain Crimes-One Count

-Tampering w/ Evidence (Felony)-One Count

-Possession of Marijuana (Misdemeanor)-One Count

-Possession & Use of Drug Related Objects-One Count

-Driving While License Suspended-One Count

Khadim Hanne, Abdul Sow, Michael Buchanan and Reece Smith were arrested in Lavonia on Dec.17 after they allegedly used counterfeit U.S. currency at a local restaurant and convenience store.
