A man is facing arson charges after a fire at a mobile home in Gainesville Saturday night.
Hall County Fire Marshal's Office Lieutenant Cacey Henderson said Monday said crews were called to the mobile home on Odell Street at around 8:00 p.m.
"They found a small fire on the back porch that had run up the wall from the porch and was entering into the attic space of the house," Henderson said. "From direct fire, I would say probably about 25 percent of the house was affected, but with smoke and water damage, approximately 50 percent of the structure was lost."
Henderson said officials then began investigating the fire, which led to suspicions of arson.
"There was a lot of things that weren't adding up," Henderson said. "(Witnesses) saw a suspect on scene that was carrying around a mattress that was found right in the area of (the fire's) origin on the back porch...(the suspect) was seen leaving the scene moments before the fire."
Henderson said investigators eventually identified the suspect as Moises Ramirez, age 26 of Gainesville. They were able to find and interview him shortly after the fire.
"While they were talking with him, he admitted to having lit the mattress on fire," Henderson said.
Ramirez is being held in the Hall County Jail without bond on charges including first-degree arson, as well as a drug possession charge. Henderson added that Ramirez had previously lived in the home, which was occupied by his brother.
No injuries were reported in the fire.
